Some of the most common IT challenges that are arising right now are related to students shifting to online learning, and employees transitioning to a work-from-home (WFH) model, if possible. Simply put, too few organizations have gone through the capacity planning exercises to allow for this unprecedented way of learning and working.  

Many organizations which still have a majority of IT infrastructure in an on-premises environment are struggling to scale hardware-based VPN solutions from supporting a small fraction of their workforce to accommodating the vast majority. Software licenses for concurrent connections, physical network capacity, bandwidth, and throughput limitations, and quickly enabling office workers to connect from home are the major inhibitors to delivering WFH at-scale in an on-prem model. These challenges can be addressed quickly and securely by having WFH users connect to virtual VPN appliances in an AWS Virtual Private Cloud with a private connection back to the corporate datacenter.  

AWS has proactively scaled servers and network capacity in order to respond to additional load resulting from changing work patterns, while protecting our customers from short-term supply disruptions. If your customer has an issue related to capacity planning in the AWS cloud, we have a team standing-by to help work through these issues. 

In the meantime, here are six services that can be particularly useful for supporting business continuity and to enable a more agile workforce overall:  

Amazon WorkSpaces  

A managed, secure Desktop-as-aService (DaaS) solution. Yocan use Amazon WorkSpaces to provision either Windows or Linux desktops in just a few minutes and quickly scale to provide thousands of desktops to workers across the globe. You can pay either monthly or hourly, just for the WorkSpaces you launch, which helps you save money when compared to traditional desktops and on-premises VDI solutions. 

New Amazon WorkSpaces customers can get started immediately with our free tier offer for the Amazon WorkSpaces Standard Bundle that includes 2 workspaces. Starting April 1st, AWS will offer free use of Amazon WorkSpaces with Standard, Value, and Performance bundles for up to 50 WorkSpaces through June 30, 2020.* 

Amazon AppStream 2.0   

Ideal for Educational or Public Sector organizations that want to enable remote learning, Amazon AppStream 2.0 is recommended to support rapid deployment of virtual computer labs that provide students with the resources they need to continue learning from home and at a distance. Higher Education and K-12\Secondary schools can use AppStream 2.0 to deliver general productivity and accelerated graphics applications including AutoCAD, SolidWorks, MATLAB, and many other application titles that students may not be able to access in impacted areas. 

Amazon Chime  

A communications service that lets you meet, chat, and place business phone calls with a single, secure application. You don’t need to switch between applications to collaborate and can instantly go from a chat to a call, share your screen, and invite more people to join your meeting.  

AWS is offering it for free for online meetings and video conferencing through June 30, 2020 for all customers who start using Amazon Chime for the first time during this period. This will happen automatically for customers who started using Amazon Chime after March 4, 2020. This does not include PSTN services, such as Voice Connector, call-me or meeting dial-in. Customers who are already using Amazon Chime should contact their AWS account manager regarding credits for Chime usage during this time.*  

Amazon Connect  

Ideal for any organization that needs to quickly set up a contact center, or scale to meet demand spikes, Amazon Connect enables remote agents to service employees and customers, Amazon Connect is an easy to use omnichannel cloud contact center that helps companies  provide superior customer service at  a lower cost. Amazon Connect provides a seamless experience across voice and chat for your customers and agents. This includes one set of tools for skills-based routing, powerful real-time and  historical  analytics, and easy-to-use intuitive management tools – all with pay-as-you-go pricing, which means Amazon Connect simplifies contact center operations, improves agent efficiency, and lowers costs. You can set up a contact center in minutes that can scale to support millions of customers. 

AWS Client VPN  

Ideal for any organizations that want to enable scalable remote access VPN for their workforce, AWS Client VPN is a  fully-managed, pay-as-you-go, elastic remote access TLS VPN service that will seamlessly scale to thousands of users, eliminating the  need to deal with the capital expense of buying hardware VPN appliances, or the operational complexity of scaling and patching. It allows you to provide easy connectivity to your workforce and your business partners, along with the ability to monitor and manage all of the connections from one console. You can create Client VPN endpoints, associate them with the desired VPC subnets, and set up authorization rules to enable your users to access the desired cloud, on-premises and Internet resources from their laptop and mobile devices. 

Amazon WorkDocs  

A fully managed, secure content creation, storage, and collaboration service. With Amazon WorkDocs, you can easily create, edit, and share content, and because it’s stored centrally on AWS, access it from anywhere on any device – PC, Mac, iOS and Android mobile devices via web, and mobile application. Amazon WorkDocs makes it easy to collaborate with others, and lets you easily share content, provide rich feedback, and collaboratively edit documents. 

AWS will offer free use of all Amazon WorkDocs features with 1 TB of storage per user for up to the first 50 users from March 16, 2020 to June 30, 2020 for all customers that start using Amazon WorkDocs for the first time during this period from their AWS account.*
